I think I've always loved the trades.
When I was young my parents purchased blueprints and hired contractors to build their home, and though I was in early grade school, I remember certain things very vividly.
I remember the stakes in the ground and vibrant orange spray paint in the grass. I remember walking through the house after the framing was complete questioning, 'How is this is going to be our house?'. When it poured, I remember helping my parents remove water off the subfloor. I remember a tradeswoman working on the upstairs bathroom. I must have asked to help, because I can recall pulling out spacers and filling nail holes in the trim. Most of all, I remember the smell of sawdust, which still brings me a sense of nostalgia and led to my initial curiosity for woodworking.
My first shop class was in the middle school, and I loved it. I continued taking shop classes throughout middle and high school. I even doubled up in shop and submitted a piece as my senior project. I had spent so much time in shop, and it had become something of a second home to me, but I never thought of it more than just a hobby.
Throughout my years attending Temple University, I questioned the career I was so destined to meet. After graduating my qualms grew and I made the decision to pursue what brought me joy- working and building with my hands. It was tough, but I found a lot of empowerment working for handyman companies.
Since starting my business in 2021, I've attended trade classes, completed two certifications programs in construction management, received my OSHA-30, and most recently passed my G-13 National Residential Building Contractor Exam to become a licensed contractor. And I have no plans to stop learning and growing in the trades.
This business has been challenging yet incredibly rewarding and I am excited to see what ventures lie ahead.
